Music and architecture have been part of human cultural heritage since time immemorial. In ancient Greece, the Pythagorean philosophers linked music with a number-theoretical system of order in order to establish a connection between musical composition in the form of harmony theory and the theory of proportion in architecture. Architects, musicians, and philosophers, as well as mathematicians and physicists, have sought and created connections between the two arts over the centuries. The history of music is linked to spaces. There is no sound without space. Space is a sounding body like an instrument and conveys an atmospheric, acoustic, sensual to spiritual dimension. Humans enter into an inner contact with space and art as resonant beings, whereby the language of art does not have to be consciously understandable. Much remains unspeakable and yet has a strong effect on us. In the common experience with space and audience something arises that touches you and is not predictable. For example, a bad mood before a concert can turn into a shared enthusiasm when we are together. Neuroscience explains this change to us via the mirror neurons of our brain, which leads to an unconscious communication or “contagion” of moods. Just in the pandemic, we were able to experience the difference between analog events with an audience and virtual performances without an audience. In presence we meet together in a space, the localization in a common world. Listeners and viewers automatically interact with other people and with artists. Artists are also influenced by the resonance of those present. A resonance does not remain without effect. Let us surprise you with what renowned speakers from different disciplines can tell us about this topic and inspire you to discuss resonance in the space of the symposium. Something new is sure to emerge that continues to resonate.
