After the inspiring experience of the performance of Orazio Benevoli’s Missa in Angustia Pestilentiae by four choirs at the Carinthian Summer Music Festival 2022, this work will be heard again this year.
Benevoli composed it in 1656 in a time full of anxiety and fear. The plague had returned to Rome and claimed a million victims. Pope Alexander VII imposed a strict quarantine on the city and ordered hospitals to be set up.
Thereafter, he commissioned a 16-voice mass for four choirs, who sung to combat the anguish of the soul caused by plague and desperation.
