We mourn the loss of Thomas Daniel Schlee
The Carinthian Summer Festival mourns the loss of Dr. Thomas Daniel Schlee, who passed away on November 10, 2025, at the age of 68. He served as artistic director of the festival from 2004 to 2015, succeeding Dr. Gerda Fröhlich, who died just a few days ago.
The composer, organist, and cultural manager Schlee shaped the Carinthian Summer Festival as its artistic director for eleven years, expanding the festival's program diversity and venues during this time. A profound connoisseur and promoter of contemporary music, he continued the church opera productions established by his predecessors at the Carinthian Summer Festival and enabled numerous contemporary composers to premiere their works.
Artistic Director Nadja Kayali:
The loss of two important figures in Austrian cultural life, and especially in the Carinthian Summer Festival, within just a few days is devastating. We are deeply saddened by the passing of Thomas Daniel Schlee, a great composer who, based on his extensive knowledge, was able to create exquisite programs for the Carinthian Summer Festival that garnered significant international acclaim. We will always cherish his memory and his work.
