Swan Song – An Evening of Longing
Last night was all about longing, because Franz Schubert's Schwanengesang (Swan Song) is about the longing for unattainable love – this song cycle from the summer of 1828 was only published after Schubert's early death, and the songs are among his most beautiful, as could be heard yesterday.
Baritone Georg Nigl and actress Birgit Minichmayr created a compelling interplay between the music of Schubert and the poetry of Christine Lavant, accompanied by Olga Pashchenko on the historical fortepiano.
Nadja Kayali gave a concert introduction beforehand at the Stiftsschmiede restaurant in Ossiach.
