When asked how to best understand the Piano Sonata No. 17 in D minor from the newly published op. 31, Beethoven is said to have replied: Just read Shakespeare’s Tempest. If the character of Prospero can be regarded as a self-portrait of the author, is The Tempest also a programmatic sonata? Certainly, Rudolf Buchbinder’s interpretation has something to say about that.

Rudolf Buchbinder is considered one of the greatest Beethoven interpreters of our time. In the course of his unprecedentedly long career, which now spans over 60 years, he has explored Beethoven’s work as deeply as only few others have done before him. He has performed the 32 sonatas in their entirety more than 60 times all over the world and has continued to refine and develop his interpretation over the years.

He opens his solo recital in Villach with Beethoven’s capricious Sonata in F Major from Op. 10, which was written between 1796 and 1798 and in which the signs of a new era are announced. The second half of the concert evening with Rudolf Buchbinder is devoted entirely to Franz Schubert’s last piano sonata, a masterpiece that is as monumental as it is introspective and thought-provoking.
