Schubert Quintet

18:30 p.m. Concert introduction: Nadja Kayali

The exquisite Cologne-based Esmé Quartet has won several prizes at prestigious competitions and festivals in recent years (Wigmore Hall London, Festival Aix-en-Provence). This evening, the four musicians will perform Mozart's String Quartet KV 575 and a masterpiece by Franz Schubert, the String Quintet in C major D 956. They will be joined by cellist Eckart Runge, this season's Festival Artist of the Carinthian Summer Festival. As a founding member of the legendary Artemis Quartet, he is a guarantee for intense chamber music moments.

Mozart's String Quartet K. 575 is the first of three quartets intended for the music-loving Prussian King Frederick William II, who dabbled in the cello. However, the king never played it. In the light-footed Andante, Mozart incorporated the well-known melody of his song " Das Veilchen" (The Violet ) in the interplay between the lyrical violin part and the cello part intended for the king.

Schubert's String Quintet in C major , a pinnacle of chamber music, brimming with shifting moods and emotions, will be performed. The unique atmosphere of the church in Ossiach underscores the intensity Schubert conveys in his final chamber work, transporting us, quite literally, beyond the bounds of time.
