Star harpist Xavier de Maistre draws out the tonal diversity among the instruments of an entire orchestra from the Grande Dame.
Xavier de Maistre is one of the most relevant and innovative harpists of today. In 2010 he resigned from his position of Harpist with the Vienna Philharmonic to venture upon a solo career. In the solemn atmosphere of the Abbey Church of Ossiach, de Maistre presents a programme that spans from the Sophia Corris Sonata composed during the Viennese Classical period, to the impressionistic sound world of Gabriel Fauré and Claude Debussy.
Benjamin Britten’s Suite, composed in 1969 for the Welsh Harpist Osian Ellis, combines Baroque and Romantic stylistic elements, but pays homage to the Celtic Harp tradition in its broad finale. To end the evening, Henriette Renié’s Légende, based on a poem by Leconte de Lisle, carries us off into a fairy-tale morbid moonlit night.
